I listened with amusement as she was describing a man with some fascinating personifications. If he were a song, a car, a colour and an animal what would he be? That’s India Arie singing Complicated Melody. I listen to it play for the umpteenth time (yeah, one of my favourite songs) and a fun thought cross my mind, I may have met a few complicated melodies myself.
I met my best friend at the university. A mutual friend introduced us. This dude thought it was sleek for us to play a game of “find-me-first”. The first person to spot the other on campus will win a bar of chocolate. I have to admit, it was sleek of him to throw in an incentive but more importantly, it was fun. I remember looking out for him only for the tall guy to hit my head (I see you he said). He won (he cheated π) and yet he decided to hand me the prize.
Our friendship took off from there. We did fun things together; told a taxi driver our uncle owned Frankies π, auditioned for an Ebo Whyte play. He taught me some dance steps and he helped me with house chores too. He was the first guy to officially ask me out on a date, there was a condition; only if I dressed up in a skirt he liked.
If he were a song, he’d be Whitney Houston’s “My love is your love”, I mean all the words in that song is him. If he were a car, he would be a Land Rover Defender. We’ve travelled through thick and thin paths, rough and smooth roads, muddy and dry lands. He had my manual(I guess he still has it). What animal would he be? (Take a wild guess).
My second is no doubt a complicated melody. If he were a song, he would be Wiz Khalifa’s “Roll up”. No, not the entire song, just the laughs at the intro of the song. It had always been a joke from day one. I had a crush on him and then it happened. We met and decided we liked each other. We had witty conversations, I love to laugh, and he was funny. But as they say ‘some relationships will only help you discover new restaurants’ and fun places to hang out. He is definitely one of those songs I can’t sing on key. I prefer laughing like Wiz Khalifa. If he were a car, he would be the Hyundai Sonata, shaped like a Benz but it’s NOT a Benz. If he were an animal, he would be a Chameleon because he is different things to different people. Perhaps it’s best to admire your crushes from afar, don’t get close to them. It ruins the magic.
You have never known complicated if you haven’t met a guy who’s awesome, kind and yet unavailable. He shows up when he wants and in style. I rehearse my anger speech over and over, he pulls up and suddenly, I have no words. I will just be swooned by his presence. If he were a car, he would be a Mercedes, and specifically a black S Class. Make that an S450. He dazzles you with awesomeness and leaves you hypnotized when he vanishes. If he were an animal I think he would be a cat. He doesn’t care how angry he makes you, he will sleep in your well laid bed and pretend everything is alright. If he were a song, he would be one of those songs you listen to a number of times because they are great but the lyrics keep eluding you. Yes! I get it, Stonebwoy’s “Putuu”. It just doesn’t make sense but I love to dance to it.
I love my best friend, he’s a song I intend to sing forever. Once in a while, we want to laugh and dance too.
Some melodies are joyous, others are complicated, and some are both. All melodies are fun.
