Well, not surprisingly I found my mind wondering again when my boss assumed I was being productive.
How exactly it came to be that my wandering mind landed on my first crush, I have no idea. Either way, my first crush was in Class 1. Yep, I started early. I don’t remember anything I learned in class 1, but I do remember Attawa. She was a twin – her brother was Atta. Her brother was the kind who got in a lot of fights, but this is not about him.
Attawa eh, hmmm!! The things I did to get her attention. My pocket money for lunch was one pesewa – Yes, the bronze coin with the talking drums on the front and star on the back. I used to buy oblayo/ekuegbemi for my Attawa. Being the queen she was, I couldn’t just buy plain oblayo like that. I had to add milk – now, keep in mind this was a time the milk was sold separately. The most romantic gesture obviously would be to add milk. So of course, I would buy two table spoons of milk with the oblayo for my queen. Don’t ask me if I ate some or what I ate at school if I spent my lunch money on her. That, dear reader is a story for another day.
Attawa could do no wrong. I am very convinced she was the one who made braiding natural hair fashionable. That girl could rock “house help” braid and all househelps would be jealous. Come to think of it, I can’t even remember if there were any other girls in my class. If you ask my mum, she will tell you she had no problems getting me ready to go to school. If school was 7 days a week, 365 days a year I would not miss a single day. I sure won’t miss any opportunity to see my Attawa. I was lucky enough to be invited to her (and her brother’s I guess, but who cares about him) birthday. I was going to represent at my Attawa’s party. Come see me in my political suit…no be easy. Oh and you know back then they used to make these feathers with cellotape and safety pin thing? I had one of those pinned to my pocket. I do have a picture somewhere, but since I have every intention of running for political office, I will keep that picture locked away. Lol.
I am sure you are curious how things ended or didn’t end between my Attawa and I. Perhaps I will tell you someday when I find my mind wandering again.

Is it safe to say we owe Attawa for keeping you in school?
